Its ever-evolving hood ornaments of the ’50s played up the marketing surrounding its OHV Rocket V-8 powerplant. With rocket fins and swept wings like early ’50s fighter jets, these sculptures made a bold statement.The engine proved so popular, the division's 88 models were popularly called Rocket 88s. Oldsmobile Rocket engines were powerful, reliable and fast. Oldsmobile was way ahead of its competitor and somehow it was a precursor to the factory muscle cars of a decade later, where large and potent engines were shoe-horned into small packages. It enjoyed great success, mostly due to its popularity among ex-military personnel and hot-rodders.
