1968 - 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass W-31 Emblem T-Shirt for Men
As big as the "supercar" movement had become, by the late Sixties--and certainly by 1970, GM that was producing high-performance intermediates also began to offer affordable alternatives. The W-31 was offered on F-85 Club Coupe, Cutlass Supreme coupe and standard Cutlass coupe for 1968, and brought ram-air induction scoops mounted beneath the front bumper, feeding large tubes that passed through the fenderwells to reach the dual-snorkel air cleaner. The W-31 package offered engine upgrades included the use of what's become known as the 308 camshaft. Period literature mentioned "select fit" components, these were internal engine pieces that were chosen to provide the optimum weights and tolerances in order to meet the factory's "blueprint" of the small-block. Pistons, bearings and the crankshaft were all included in this process. The connecting rods were also specific to the W-31 engine, and are identified by the last three digits of the casting part number, which, somewhat ironically, are 442. A newly designed set of cylinder heads, designated #6, was also part of the W-31 engine package. Completing the fuel/air induction system was an aluminum intake manifold with a "performance calibrated" 750-CFM Rochester Quadrajet, as well as the W25 low-restriction air cleaner assembly. Base offering for the W-Machine was a fully synchronized, floor-shifted, heavy-duty three-speed manual mated to a Hurst Competition shifter. It seems that W-31 buyers usually passed over the three-speed for one of the optional M-20 wide-ratio four-speed manual. Also available was the close-ratio M-21 four-speed. Each came equipped with a Hurst shifter that could have been surrounded by an optional center console. Of course, there was also the special W Turbo Hydra-Matic 350, also known by production code M38. This was no ordinary THM 350; the JO-coded unit was specially built with higher valve-body pressure and a 2,600-2,900 RPM stall converter. When ordering the W-31 package, a buyer was faced with a choice of performance axle packages. It's been suggested that the most common pick would be G92, which had a 3.42:1 final drive ratio.
