Bill Thomas Cheetah 1963 - 1966 Aluminum Parking Sign
The Bill Thomas Cheetah was a sports car built from 1963-1966 by Chevrolet performance tuner Bill Thomas as a competitor to Carroll Shelby's Cobra. In 1963, Thomas gained covert support from GM to develop a concept vehicle to compete against the Cobra. The prototype was designed jointly by Thomas, and his lead fabricator at the time, Don Edmunds. Financing came from private investors including. Thomas arranged for material assistance from Chevrolet for the major components - specifically, the Corvette 327 engine, Muncie transmission and independent rear-end assemblies. The positioning of the engine was done to improve performance; it sat very far back in the engine bay resulting in the driver compartment moving rearward. In fact, it was so much rearward, that the engine was directly connected to the rear end. The engine was mated to a Borg Warner T-10 four-speed gearbox and sent the power to the rear wheels. The rear wheels were a mere inches behind the driver. The entire package was clothed in a lightweight aluminum hand-formed Coupe body featuring exotic gullwing doors. The racing history of the Cheetah is noteworthy and could have been very successful despite the fact that the car suffered from the typical problems that plague any new project. On the dragstrip, the car reportedly posted faster numbers than the 427 Cobra. Unfortunately, a fire in the factory destroyed the original plywood body buck and some spare parts inventory, and the decision was made to close the chapter on the Cheetah.
