On May 30, 1970, racing legend Rodger Ward wheeled this month's feature car around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, leading a field of racers that included A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Mark Donohue and Dan Gurney. When the checkered flag flew and the smoke cleared, The 4-4-2 carried a jubilant Al Unser around the brick on a victory lap while thousands of spectators cheered. The revised body style and increased performance resulted in the 1970 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 being awarded pace car duties at the Indianapolis 500 race in 1970. Just 268 Oldsmobile 442 Convertibles produced with the Y74 Indy Pace Car Package. Equipped with the 455/365 HP engine with added W-30 equipment including the special cam, a twin-scooped fiberglass Force Air hood and Red inner wheel wells. This incredibly torque-rich powerplant is teamed with GM’s 400 Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission – complete with console-mounted Hurst Dual Gate shifter – and a heavy duty Positraction rear end. Special Y72 heavy duty engine cooling was crucial to the Pace Car’s high-speed mission, but there is plenty of comfort and luxury built into the package as well as the unmistakable Porcelain White and Black livery, including Sport suspension, power steering and brakes, power bucket seats, electric trunk release, tinted glass and an AM/FM radio.
