1966 Oldsmobile Toronado Aluminum Parking Fridge Magnet

The introduction of the Toronado to the Oldsmobile line in 1966 is considered to be among its most significant innovations created during the company's existence. The Toronado was the first front-wheel-drive car from General Motors and the first such American vehicle produced since the Cord of the 1930s. Among the accolades bestowed upon the Toronado was the Motor Trend Car of the Year honors. Oldsmobile's experimentation with a front-wheel-drive setup began in 1958. The research and experimentation had concluded that it would reduce weight, reduce production costs, and improve fuel economy. A 425-cubic-inch V-8 provided more than ample thrust. The only transmission option was the Turbo Hydra-Matic heavy-duty three-speed automatic which had been mated to a unique silent chain-drive system called Hy-Vo in order to send power to the front wheels. Perhaps the only downside to the Toronado was the fact that in its first year of production it came with drum brakes on all four corners. Given the weight of the car these brakes tended to fade relatively quickly with heavy use – an issue that was rectified in 1967 when vented front disc brakes were offered as an option. The interior eschews bucket seats and console in favor of a front bench seat, the better to show off the novelty of the car's flat floor. The speedometer is a rotating drum, and the gargantuan doors are so long that they feature a second inside door handle at the rearmost point of the armrest, to allow rear-seat passengers to exit. On the road, testers noted that the Toro handled extremely well for a car of its size and that the big 425-cid V-8 combined with a relatively slippery shape gave it an extraordinarily high top speed of 135 mph. The first two years are considered to be the most attractive with the original concept getting watered down progressively post-1967. The Toronado is on most lists as a milestone car with solid engineering and fantastic style.
