With the Jet-Age in full swing, Oldsmobile introduced the convertible Starfire in mid-1961, successfully combining style, luxury, and high-performance into an elegant package. Its name was shared with the preeminent American jet fighter of the era. It shared its platform with the 88 but with the more powerful 394 cubic-inch Rocket V8 engine. The grille was from the 98. Distinguishable features included the full-length brushed aluminum side-sweep that would become the car's visual signature. Standard items on the Starfire included power front bucket seats, a dual exhaust system, leather interior, Hydra-Matic transmission, limited-slip differential, power windows, power brakes, power steering, trunk release, antenna, and console-mounted tachometer. The interior was finished in leather. The Oldsmobile Starfire caused a sensation from the moment it was first introduced in mid-1961. A two-door Holiday Hardtop with seating for five joined the convertible in 1962. The Starfire was Oldsmobile's entry into the personal luxury market where it competed with the torpedo Thunderbirds introduced in 1961. These cars were the most luxurious, expensive, and top-of-the-line Oldsmobiles of the early 1960s. The 1962 Starfire received brushed aluminum side panels. At nearly a foot-wide, it was anything but garnish and certainly unique and distinctive. The most popular body style of the Starfire was the Holiday Two-Door Hardtop.
