Oldsmobiles for 1953 were the first fitted with a 12 volt electrical system. Coming out of the Korean War, the economy was booming, and as a result, production for 1953 soared to 332,086 units. The Ninety-Eight models had all items from the lower series cars as standard equipment plus padded dash, windshield washers, DeLuxe steering wheel, and horn ring. Upholstery selections were broadcloth, gabardine, or leather. As was the practice, some options available on the 98 were not available on the 88 or S88. The car saw the engine improved a little more, with even higher compression for 165 horsepower. In addition, Bendix power brakes and Frigidaire air conditioning could be ordered on the Olds 98 for the first time. A fire at GM’s huge Hydra-Matic transmission factory in meant that no transmissions were available for five producers of automobiles, including Oldsmobile, resulting in the loss of up to 300,000 units produced and sold. GM reacted with extreme speed and a few late 1953 Oldsmobiles were equipped with Buick-supplied Dynaflow automatic transmissions until a makeshift factory could start turning out Hydra-Matics again.
